The cops found their SUV abandoned in the woods.
On the ground near the car there were strands of rope.
They cops could only conclude that the boys were bound with rope and tape and carried away tied up.

They lay in the dirt. Their arms were tied behind their backs... left wrist to right bicep, right wrists to left bicep with ropes... forearms taped together. A rope from their forearms was tied to their necks.
Their boots and socks were removed. Their ankles crossed and tied with ropes, as were their thighs and legs. Bending their feet back, a rope around their two large toes hogtied them to their necks.
Rags had been shoved down their throats, and tape starting between their teeth circled their heads half a dozen times, cementing the gag in place.
Photographed, bound and gagged, their feet being tickled making them move their legs and begin to choke, they were left
"Now, lock them in. And when the ransom is paid set the place on fire!"
The door was locked.
And their desperate struggles began.
